How One Vocation Began...
I grew up in a small town in Nevada surrounded by sage brush, covered hills and often no priest for our little church. This still leaves me wondering how God ever found me. But God can make use of anything for His purposes even a silver dollar.
When I was only 7 years old, my grandmother had died and one day my Mother wanted to go through some of grandmother's things. She took me with her to the house and to keep me occupied she gave me grandmother's sewing basket to look through. In the basket I found a silver dollar. (Common currency at that time). I showed it to my Mother and she said I could keep it as I had found it. I began to consider all the goodies I could buy with that dollar. Then my Mother's voice broke in again and she said that if I wanted, I could give the dollar to God by putting it in the collection on Sunday. Then she suggested that I remember that whatever we give to God, God gives us back a hundredfold. She also told me that it was mine, and I could do with it what I wanted. That rather dampened things for me.
However, when Sunday came, a small child could be seen clutching a silver dollar in her hand as she entered the church. When she left the church, her hands were empty, the sacrifice total and complete.
I had forgotten about that incident for many years before I came to realize just what that gift of a hundredfold was to be.
