Feast Of St. Francis
BLESSING ASSISI

Saint Francis was grievously ill and nearing his end. He asked the Brothers to carry him down from Assisi to Saint Mary of the Angels where he wished to die. On the way, they stopped and turned round so that he should face towards his native town. He gave the city his last blessing and thanked God for all the good He had bestowed on it and on its inhabitants.

VENERATION OF SAINT CLARE

The funeral procession on its way to Assisi, stopped at San Damiano, in order that Saint Clare and her sisters might see their father for the last time. They kissed the wounds on his hands and wept piteously at their great loss. Then, amid a crowd of people carrying torches and olive branches, the relics of the saint made their triumphal entry into the city.

Sacred Times October 2005

Francis of Assisi who opposed the Crusades and learned from an Islamic teacher, Sultan Al-Kamil.

The Jewish High Holy Days, (Tishrei), the Islamic Month of Ramadan, the Christian feast of St. Francis of Assisi, and World-wide (Protestant/Orthodox) Communion Sunday all occur during October 2005. This is a season when all have an opportunity to unite in peacemaking efforts.
During these sacred times, we Franciscan Missionaries of Mary suggest joining our brothers and sisters throughout the world in a day of fast and prayer on Oct. 13th. If possible, do this in a public way with those of all our traditions. Please see "October Surprise." www.tentofabraham.org

Francis tried to convert the Egyptians, by striking a bargain with Sultan Al-Kamil. Francis said that he would go into a fiery furnace and, if he came out alive, the Egyptians would convert to Christianity. Al-Kamil's answer to Francis was a gentle and a wise one.

Gambling with one's life, he argued, is not a valid proof of one's God. With respect, he spared Francis' life and sent him on his way again.
