| Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, Fruit Hill, North Providence Rhode Island hosted the Ecumenical Celebration of the Word, which was attended by people from several churches along with their spiritual leaders and a Gospel choir from Holy Name Parish.
|
Mary Motte, provincial gave the welcome and invocation of the Triune God.
|
Prayers and Proclamations of the Word of God were done by representatives from the different churches. During the Prayers of Confession and Pardon, members of the congregation came forward to place a stone at the foot of a plain cross. This gesture symbolized Christ as the foundation of the church. It expressed the desire for conversion and renewed belonging in Christ for the construction of the one church. |
Fr. Eugene McKenna read 1 Corinthians 3:1-23
|
Throughout the Celebration,
the Gospel Choir sang hymns
of praise and led the responses
to the Word of God. |

Noah Merrill, a Quaker,life-long member of the Religious Society of Friends, was the homilist. The Gospel from Matthew 7:24-27 was the Word of God that Noah Merrill, used in his presentation. |
His message was powerful and challenging and much appreciated by all. Here are a few excerpts from his presentation.
Christian unity is about hope, the hope we receive from the knowledge that a better way of living is possible, because we have lived it and we have seen it modeled by those who have gone before us through centuries of Christian community. It's about a willingness to stand against injustice, and to humbly witness to a better way of living. Jesus is the example. We are the seekers, humbly modeling our-selves after his teachings, and supporting each other as a loving community on the journey.
Christians as a body are called by the teachings of Jesus to hear the words articulated in the Book of Matthew and ACT ON THEM. We are called not to judge, but to strive to build a society, and a kingdom of god on earth, that values all people, that does unto others as we would have them do unto us, and that serves the one master that bears the fruit of life-the spirit of Justice and love that Jesus preached on the mountain in Galilee.
We are called, through the teachings of this carpenter who preached in Galilee so many years ago, to a path of courageous nonviolence and witness to the hope and reality of a fairer global community, the community we know is possible when we base our society on the foundation of the Spirit of Justice and Love, through all the storms and blizzards of our world.
Today, when we leave this place, let us go out ready to listen to the still, small voice that speaks in our hearts. And let us be ready to act with the strength of our shared faith to carry the spirit of love and justice to our own leaders, to end this war in Iraq, and to heal the wounds of two nations. We know the sand, we know the stone. The promise of our shared future is the foundation of the Spirit.
The Celebration was continued with refreshments and fellowship in Lourdes Hall served by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. |
